Charisma isn’t just something you’re born with, a lot of it can actually be trained—and that’s exactly what we study in the lab

The Acoustics Lab at Centre for Industrial Electronics (CIE) was recently featured in the NANO Doku series on the 3sat channel—and we loved being part of it. Science journalist Jasmina Daria Neudecker visited us at SDU to explore a simple but powerful question: "Can you train charisma?" Together with our lab leader Oliver Niebuhr, she went on a hands-on journey into the world of voice, experimenting with pitch, intonation, pauses, and presence.

Mission

The CIE Acoustics lab is built around the central concept of sound quality assessment. Our environment is getting louder and louder, and both the noise sources and their sound characteristics are becoming ever more diverse. At the same time, digital mass media and global markets give the power of the human voice a whole new meaning. Our equipment meets these challenges of the twenty-first century. We can produce, record and measure sound multidimensionally and multiparametrically; and, in each of these contexts, we can analyse patterns of human behaviour, physiology and speech.

Vision

Sound and noise are increasingly relevant for the competitiveness of companies. They are important factors in the production, accreditation of products and as a product feature. SDU has unique competences within vibration and air-borne noise measurement as well as psycho-acoustics.
